Are background checks required for a Florida Concealed Weapon License?
All applicants submit fingerprints checked against the Florida Crime Information Center database (FCIC), the National Crime Information Center database (NCIC), and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for disqualifying offenses.
Does a Florida CCW License exempt you from the background check when buying a firearm?
No. Due to Federal Laws, having a Florida Concealed Weapon License or any other state's concealed weapon license or permit does not exempt you from the background check when purchasing a gun in the state of Florida.
How long is a Florida Concealed Weapon License valid for?
Licenses issued on or after June 11, 2008 are valid for seven years. Licenses issued before June 11, 2008 are only valid for five years. The expiration date appears on the front of your license.
What is the processing time for a Florida Concealed Weapon License?
The processing time is approximately 90 days from the date they receive your application. You can check status using the Concealed Weapon License Application Online Status Check.
How much does a Florida Concealed Weapon License cost?
Initial fee for residents and non-residents is $102 ($42 fingerprint processing fee and $60 initial license fee). Renewals for residents cost $50; non-residents $92 (includes $42 fingerprint fee). Duplicate or revised copies cost $15.
What are the requirements for a Florida Concealed Weapon License?
You must be 21 years or older, display firearm competency, currently reside in the US, and be a US Citizen or permanent resident alien.
How does a Florida resident apply for a Concealed Weapon License?
Three options: online application, in-person at a Florida Department of Agriculture regional office or authorized tax collector's office, or mail application with fingerprints submitted electronically.
What can cause a Florida Concealed Weapons License application to be denied?
Physical inability handling firearms safely, felony conviction, adjudication withheld or suspended sentence on violent crimes, misdemeanor violence conviction within three years, controlled substance violations, drug or alcohol abuse record, multiple DUIs within three years, mental institution commitment, failure to prove firearm proficiency, domestic violence injunction, renounced citizenship, dishonorable discharge, or fugitive status.
Does military training exempt you from the training requirements?
Yes. Active-duty members can submit Common Access Card or official military identification. Honorably discharged veterans can submit a copy of their DD 214 long form.
How do I renew my Florida Concealed Weapon License and what is the cost?
You receive renewal forms approximately 150 days before expiration. Send to: Concealed Weapon or Firearm License Renewal, Division of Licensing, Post Office Box 6387, Tallahassee, Florida 32314-6387. You may also renew at a regional office by appointment.
How do you change a name or address on a Florida Concealed Weapon License?
For name changes, provide written request with legal document verification and a $15 check. For address changes, notify within 30 days via online form or written submission to Division of Licensing.
What if your Florida Concealed Weapon License is lost, stolen, or damaged?
Obtain a duplicate for $15 by submitting a notarized written statement and check to Division of Licensing, P.O. Box 6387, Tallahassee, FL 32314-6387.
Can I transfer another state's concealed carry permit to Florida?
No. You must apply for a new Florida Concealed Weapon License. Out-of-state permits are valid for 90 days after establishing Florida residency.
Does Florida accept other states' concealed carry permits?
Yes, Florida currently honors 35 other states' licenses and permits. Check reciprocity maps for up-to-date information.
Do other states recognize Florida Concealed Weapon Licenses?
Yes, 36 states recognize and honor Florida Concealed Weapon Licenses. When carrying in another state, obey that state's concealed carry laws.
Do I need to inform Law Enforcement that I am carrying a concealed weapon?
No Florida law requires this. You must carry your license and valid identification and display both upon demand. The suggestion is to inform officers you are armed.
