Why Anti‑Gun States Are Running the Jim Crow Playbook on Permits

Anti‑gun states aren’t regulating, they’re resurrecting the Jim Crow strategy of weaponized bureaucracy, using delays, denials, and arbitrary hoops to keep ordinary citizens from exercising a constitutional right. They know they can’t ban guns outright, so they choke the permit process until only the privileged can navigate it, turning a right into a government‑controlled privilege.

These states hide behind “public safety” while running the same discriminatory playbook once used to suppress voting: make the process so punishing, expensive, and unpredictable that people give up. Criminals don’t apply for permits, don’t sit through interviews, don’t pay fees, and don’t wait months for approval. Every obstacle falls on the law‑abiding, single mothers who want protection, minorities in dangerous neighborhoods, working‑class families who can’t afford endless fees, veterans who already exceed safety standards.

Anti‑gun politicians claim they want “responsible people” to carry but then force citizens to prove their worthiness to bureaucrats who can deny them based on personal bias. That’s not safety; that’s control. And as a firearms instructor, I see exactly who gets hurt: the people who actually need protection. These states intentionally complicate training, access, and compliance because they don’t want armed citizens, they want obedient ones.

A constitutional right that requires permission slips, interviews, and subjective approval is no longer a right. It’s a privilege rationed out by the same mentality that once used literacy tests and poll taxes to keep people powerless. If your permit system burdens the poor, relies on subjective judgment, and discourages lawful carry, you’re not regulating you’re running a modern Jim Crow operation aimed at the Second Amendment.

I train people from all walks of life nurses, teachers, retirees, blue‑collar workers, young parents, and professionals. Every one of them wants the same thing: to be safe and prepared.

But in anti‑gun states, these same people would be treated like potential criminals for simply wanting to protect themselves.

I’ve watched states like New York, New Jersey, California, and Maryland twist the permit process into a political weapon. They know they can’t ban guns outright, so they choke the process until only the privileged can navigate it.

That’s not “progress. "That’s not “public safety.”

That’s modern Jim Crow, aimed at a different target.
