As a Firearms Instructor, FFL and Gunsmith, I get asked all the time whether a .22 caliber handgun is a good choice for a woman’s self‑defense gun, and here’s how I look at it. A .22 isn’t the biggest round in the world, but what actually matters in a real fight is control, accuracy, and the ability to put rounds where they need to go under stress. A gun someone can shoot comfortably, confidently, and consistently is always better than a bigger gun they’re scared of or can’t control. I’ve seen plenty of people women and men shoot a .22 with precision that absolutely counts when it matters.

A .22 has almost no recoil, which means faster follow‑up shots and less flinching. It’s easy to train with, easy to handle, and easy to carry. And the truth is simple: any gun someone can run well is better than a “more powerful” gun they can’t. Shot placement wins fights, not caliber debates. If a woman feels confident with a .22, trains with it, and can put rounds exactly where they need to go, that’s a solid defensive setup. I’d rather see someone carry a gun they actually practice with than something they bought because someone else told them it was “better.”

At the end of the day, the best self‑defense weapon is the one you can control, the one you’re comfortable with, and the one you’re willing to train with. For a lot of women, that absolutely can be a .22.
