A congressman is pushing President Trump and Vice President Vance to act because the federal government is now holding 1.4 billion firearm‑transaction records, a massive, centralized database that Second Amendment advocates argue functions as an illegal national gun registry.

From my perspective as a firearms instructor, FFL and gun‑rights supporter, this situation is exactly why lawmakers are sounding the alarm. When the ATF digitizes and stores every out‑of‑business dealer’s Form 4473 records names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and the specific guns purchased, it creates a searchable archive that federal law explicitly forbids.

The Firearm Owners’ Protection Act of 1986 bans any system of firearm or firearm‑owner registration, yet this database has exploded from roughly 920 million records in 2021 to more than 1.4 billion today.

That’s not just a paperwork archive; that’s a blueprint for government overreach. Members of Congress like Rep. Michael Cloud are demanding Trump and Vance step in, investigate the ATF’s practices, destroy records kept illegally, and stop any rule that would expand or cement this registry. They’re calling for decisive executive action because Americans deserve to exercise their Second Amendment rights without being quietly entered into a federal list.

As someone who trains responsible gun owners, I see this as a direct threat to privacy, liberty, and the foundational principle that the government has no business tracking law‑abiding citizens’ firearms.
