A Martial Arts Student Disarming a Firearms Professional... Let's Take a LOOK

A gun‑control advocate recently asked what would happen if, as a yellow‑belt in Martial Arts, a person “legally disarmed” a gun owner and held them for a citizen’s arrest for being a danger to democracy.
It’s a ridiculous premise, but it deserves a serious answer. One of my closest friends is a world‑class martial artist a sensei who owns his own dojo, competes internationally, and wins tournaments in the US and Japan. He’s the real deal: a many‑degree black belt with elite skill.
I’m a professional defensive firearms instructor with solid competency, both civilian and occasionally law‑enforcement oriented. We’ve talked at length about distance, reaction time, and effectiveness. For most armed people, the Tueller Drill’s 21‑foot rule applies. For me, trained and attentive, maybe15 feet.
For him, he’s effective inside about 5 feet and can break most holds if needed. He dominates the last second of a closing threat; I dominate everything outside of close contact and sometimes even inside it. When we discuss hypotheticals, he’s clear: no serious martial artist willingly attacks an armed, trained defender. If he couldn’t disarm me before I reacted, he’d be shot. If he struck me but didn’t incapacitate me, he’d be shot. If he didn’t kill me outright, he’d be shot.
That’s not bravado that’s physics, reaction time, and reality. So, when someone with a beginner’s belt imagines they’re going to disarm trained, armed individuals and perform a citizen’s arrests, the fantasy collapses instantly. A novice trying to forcibly disarm a competent defender isn’t becoming a hero; they’re volunteering to become a cautionary tale.
